2007-0-8 Nicolas Derrico, Daniel Mokhtari, and Stephen Trusheim
were named Semi-Finalists in the 2006-07 Siemens Competition in Math, Science,
and Technology, the nation's premier science research competition for high
school students. In 2007, 1,641
students registered to enter the competition; of those, 295 students were
named semi-finalists. Three of the five semi-finalists in the state of Minnesota
were from Breck.
2006-07 Tracy Fuad and Egal Gorse were two of 14 students selected nationally to present their research at the International BioGENEius Challenge in Boston. The International BioGENEius Challenge is an annual competition that recognizes outstanding research in biotechnology. Tracy Fuad won the second grand prize of $5000. Egal Gorse received an honorable mention award of $500.
2006-07 Brandon Lew was a National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium finalist, winning a trip to the JSHS National Competition.
JulieAnn Rader, Siddharth Damania, and Ginny Dines were named to the honor society of the American Junior Academy of Science (AJAS). AJAS is a national honor society that recognizes America's premier high school students for outstanding scientific research.

JulieAnn Rader, and Sara Schilling were named 2007 Scholars of Distinction in Science. Shannon Engleman received a Meritorious
Performance award.
2006-07 Siddharth Damania, Virginia Dines, Brandon Lew, and Matthew Weiss were selected as ISEF finalists, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair. Tracy Fuad was selected as an ISEF alternate. At ISEF, Brandon Lew won a special award of $500 from the American Society of Pharacognosy. Matthew Weiss received a 4th grand prize award in chemistry of $500 at ISEF and an honorable mention award from the American Chemical Society, and Siddharth Damania was one of 36 students out 1200 selected to attend a luncheon with and present a question to a panel of Nobel laureates.

2006-07 Matthew Weiss presented his research at the 2007 American Junior Academy of Science (AJAS). He was named to the

2005-06 Meredith Blank, Michael Blazar, Michelle Hackner, Brandon Lew, Dana Lindberg, Lillian Nordahl, Katherine Shaeffer and Mathew Weiss were named 2006 Scholars of Distinction in Science. Geoffrion and Andrew McCullough were recognized for meritorious performance. They received their awards during a ceremony at the State Capitol.

Matthew Trusheim, and Matthew
Weiss were selected to present their
papers at the Junior Science and Humanities
Symposium. Daniel Geoffrion, Andrew McCullough, Katherine
Shaeffer, and Brandon Lew were named finalists.
Research done by Brendan Doms (2003), Patrick McCarthy (2004), and Andrew Davis (2005) was published in the spring issue of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry 283: 129–137, 2006. The title of the paper is ÒMetallothionein-3 and neuronal nitric oxide synthase levels in brains from the Tg2576 mouse.Ó Authorship is listed as Bruce L. Martin, Abigail M. Tokheim, Patrick T. McCarthy, Brendan S. Doms, Andrew A. Davis, and Ian M. Armitage.
2005-06 Michael Blazar was one of 13 students in the nation selected to present his research at the International BioGENEius Challenge in Chicago. The International BioGENEius Challenge recognizes outstanding research in biotechnology.
2005-06 Dana Lundberg was invited to present her work at the World ParkinsonÕs Congress in Washington, D.C in February 2006. She was also a semifinalist in the Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition (YES). The YES Competition recognizes outstanding achievement of talented students who have investigated factors that affect health and identified ways to improve the health of the public. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the College Board sponsor the award.
2005-06 Matthew Trusheim was a semifinalist in the 2005 Siemens-Westinghouse Competition that recognizes Òremarkable talentÓ in math, science and technology. Matt was one of only two semifinalists from the state of Minnesota. Matt was also one of only two semifinalists in the 2006 INTEL Science Talent Search. Matt was selected as an ISEF finalist at the MAS State Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair for the second year in a row.
2005-06 Brandon Lew, Katie Shaeffer, Matthew Weiss, and Matt Trusheim were selected as ISEF finalists, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair. Lilly Nordahl, Dan Geoffrion and Andy McCullough were selected as an ISEF alternates.

Sara Brinda (2004) co-authored a paper on work that she did in conjunction with the Breck Science Research Program titled ÒEffects of Permethrin on Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) Growth and Survival.Ó Citation data are: Karen Oberhauser, Sara Brinda, Sarah Weaver, Roger Moon, Stephan Manweiler, Nancy Read.
2004-05 Andrew Davis, Colin Drummond, Will Inglis, Rosemary Lelich, Michael Lew, Dan McKeon, Meredith Pearcy, Shaina Short, Sharde Thomas, and Matt Trusheim were named Scholars of Distinction in Science by the State Department of Minnesota. Chris Jackson, Megan Mazec and Amy Pikovsky received Meritorious Performance awards in the Scholar of Distinction competition.
2004-05 Matt Trusheim, Colin Drummond and Dan McKeon were selected as an ISEF finalists, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair.
2004-05 Andrew DavisÕ research paper titled ÒInsitu Localization of MT3 and Associated Proteins in Mouse Brain TissueÓ was chosen for submission to the Cum Laude papers. He was also selected as a finalist in the 2005 Neuroscience Research Prize competition.
2004-05 Amy Pikovsky co-authored a paper on work that she did in conjunction with the Breck Science Research Program titled "Activity Patterns of Juvenile Snapping Turtles and their Effects on Preferred Temperature Choice and Metabolic Rate."

2003-04 Laura Heeter and Krissy Naranjo-Rivera co-authored a paper on work that they did in conjunction with the Breck Science Research Program titled ÒExperimental Evaluation of Density-sensitive Ar XIV and Fe XXII Line RatiosÓ published by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. They were also named ISEF team finalists at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair.
2003-04 Mark Ledford received a $3000 award to support his research experience from the Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Foundation. Mark was named a co-author on a paper titled "Snuffbox Host Suitability Trials" that was published in Dec. 2003 Ellipsaria a publication of the Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society.

2003-04 Patrick McCarthy co-authored a paper on work that he did in conjunction with the Breck Science Research Program a paper titled ÒNitric Oxide Synthase in Brains from the Tg2576 Mouse Model of AlzheimerÕs DiseaseÓ that has been submitted to the journal Neuroscience Letters. The publication was by the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics at the University of Minnesota.
2003-04 Bill Mitchell was selected to present his paper titled ÒSynthesis of Ferrocene Derivatives: Altering Electron Density of Ferrocene-capped ThiopheneÓ at the Minnesota Academy of Sciences Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. He was a semifinalist in the INTEL Science Talent Search and was selected as an ISEF finalist at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair where he won 4th Grand Prize in Chemistry. He won second prize in the Academy of Science paper competition. Bill was named one of four Minnesota Scholars of Distinction in Science by the Minnesota Academy of Science.
2003-04 Elizabeth Shaw won second prize in the Academy of Science paper competition and was named a finalist in the Young Epidemiology Scholars competition.
2003-04 Adam Yock was named a semifinalist in the INTEL Science Talent Search and was selected as an ISEF finalist at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair.
2002-03, Javier Cabrera, and Brendan Doms were selected as ISEF finalists, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair, and Trisha Dwivedi was named an ISEF alternate.
2002-03 Vikash Kanodia and James Thomas co-authored a paper on work that they did in conjunction with the Breck Science Research Program titled "Channel Catfish is a Suitable Host Species for Mapleleaf Glochida." The paper was published in Ellipsaria a publication of the Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society. In addition, James Thomas was named as a co-author on a presentation that his advisor gave at the Minnesota Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.
2002-03 Megan Techman was selected as an ISEF finalist at the MAS State Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair. At the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair, Meg received the Fourth Place Grand Award in her division.
2001-02 Beth Brinda was a Semi-Finalist in the INTEL Science Talent Search and went to ISEF as an alternate.
2001-02 Jeffrey (Mac) McCullough co-authored a paper on work that he did in conjunction with the Breck Science Research Program titled ÒSpatial dependence of the nonlinear BOLD response at short stimulus durationÓ published in NeuroImage 18 (2003) 990-1000.
2001-02 Stephen Morris was selected as an ISEF finalist at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair.
1998-99 Megan Bailey was selected as an ISEF finalist at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair.
1998-99 Laura Egerdal was selected as an ISEF finalist at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair where she was awarded Second Grand Prize in her division and won the Navy Marine Corps Award.
1999-2000 Stephanie Friedland was selected as an ISEF finalist at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair.
1998-99 Jennifer Sou was named a semifinalist in the INTEL Science Talent Search and was selected an alternate to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair.
1998-99 Elizabeth Larkin was selected as an ISEF finalist at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair. She presented at the Minnesota Academy of Science Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Elizabeth co-authored a paper on work that she did in conjunction with the Breck Science Research Program titled ÒTemperature-induced Variation in Larval Coloration in Danaus plexippus (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), which was published in the Journal of the Entomological Society of America in 2003.
1998-99 Will Meland was acknowledged for work that he did in conjunction with the Breck Science Research Program in a paper titled "Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Site-directed Spin Labeling: Experimental Validation in Muscle Fibers." The paper was published in Biophysical Journal, October 2002. A copy of the article can be found at: http://www.biophysj.org/cgi/content/full/83/4/1854. Will participated in the research presented in this paper while in the Breck Science Research Program during his senior year.
1998-99 Anna Otieno was selected as an ISEF finalist at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair.
1997-98 Preeya Kshettry was selected as an ISEF finalist at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair. She also was presented the newest award from the Minnesota Academy of Science and returned from Northwestern University in 1999 to receive the Excellence in Communication Award for best paper.
1997-98 Bryce Gillespie was a Westinghouse Science Talent Search semifinalist. He also was selected as an ISEF finalist at the Twin Cities Regional Science and Engineering Fair, winning an all-expense paid trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair where he received Second Grand Prize in his division, and won an all expense-paid five-week trip to Israel where he did research at the Weizmann Institute. He also won the Army Award. In addition, he was selected to present his paper at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.
1994-95 Adam Regelmann was a semifinalist in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search.
1991-92 Barbie Merz was a semifinalist in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search.
1989-90 Josh Andresen was a semifinalist in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search.
