The Effect of Separation Distance on the Electrochemical Properties of Ferrocene Derivatives

Abstract

In this research three ferrocene derivatives were successfully synthesized and their redox potentials were compared to model insulators and conductors, ferrocene and biferrocene respectively. The ferrocene derivatives varied in the separation distance between the two ferrocene caps. The cyclic voltammetric testing showed that the redox potentials of the ferrocene derivatives were not sensitive to the distance between the two ferrocene caps. Further tests could be performed to further confirm that the separation distance does not effect the behavior of the molecule electrochemically, but more importantly other behavioral patterns of insulators could be conducted without having to worry about the separation distance employed by some molecules.
