1990-91 Research Class

Katie Dunn worked in the lab of Dr. George Wilcox at the U of MN. Her project involved aspects of the neuropharmcacology of pain. The lab was attempting to address the issue of neural response to drugs in two main ways: 1) by measuring behavioral responses of mice and rats and to aversive stimuli after treatment with various drug cocktails, and 2) by studying voltage responses of cells with known membrane receptor molecules in order to measure the effects of various chemicals.

Brendan Dunn worked on graff versus host disease in mouse small intestines. Brendan learned techniques of centrifugation to isolate cell platelets

Zachary Drake worked at Hennepin County General with Dr. John Crosson and Dr. Robert Anderson. He learned the techniques of electron microscopy, particularly SEM procedures. He also looked at kidney tissues from patients who exhibited IGA Nephritis with either glomerular or tubular disorders. His advisors hope that these scanning data will be useful for comparison with data that they have obtained from the transmission scope and light microscopy.

Mike Heeter worked in the School of Dentistry with Dr. Mark Herzberg. This laboratory has a particular interest in platelet function, specifically as it relates to agonist and antagonist recognition. Mike's project will involve analysis of platelet antigens in an effort to characterize the relative abundance of agonist v. antagonist receptors.
