Two groups of students from the 2007 astronomy class have
had their papers accepted for publication in the Journal for Research-Based
Science Education. This is an online journal refereed by astronomers at the
National Optical Astronomy Observatory based in Tucson, AZ. They analyzed
data from the 2.1-meter telescope at Kitt Peak, Arizona. The findings of each
group include previously unpublished findings about active galactic nuclei,
which are giant galaxies that surround supermassive black holes. Relatively
little is known about these galactic giants. It's fabulously exciting that
our Breck students are contributing to the explanation of the classification
of AGNs (Echtenkamp, et al) and winds in these swirling giants (Johnson, et
al).
