The actual journey to other solar systems may require centuries or even millennia. Imagine families of colonists of space travelers arriving at their destinations many generations after their ship left Earth. Let's assume that, while we cannot break the "light barrier," we can develop rockets fast enough to get us to Alpha Centauri within a person's lifetime-say, a ten-year trip.
